I feel like should post this for many reasons.
This blog has been my heart, and has been going strong for a little over three years. I have updated many posts and recipes. In the beginning it was more vegetarian with some meat recipes, and in the last year I have changed it all to vegan. In the last couple of weeks I have gone through some hard personal issues and it affects my diet and mental health also, and I have come to some realizations about my health and diet.
I have tried to be vegan twice on my life….once was about six years ago for eight months, and then my mother passed. So I went back to vegetarian eating. Now after seven months I’m coming back to the same issues. My body hasn’t been feeling right lately, and I feel out of balance. It’s been really hard adjusting for me on this diet. I feel overall for me it is too extreme for my own personal health to restrict my diet to be 100% vegan.
Yes I still feel for the environment and the animals, and I’m trying to make the best choices for myself while lowering my footprint and consume less of dairy and meat overall.
The first time I was vegan about six years ago. After about six months I became really anemic, I had bruises all over, and it was starting to happen again. This time I tried going vegan again, but after seven months my body wasn’t feeling right, and the bruising came back. I take supplements, but I didn’t feel as balanced as I was before. I’m also having issues getting enough protein and enough calories in my day without using protein powder in smoothies. From previous blood work I’ve also had issues with protein deficiency to the point I was malnourished, low iron, low vitamin d and some b vitamins, along with other deficiencies in my body.
I recently had some DNA testing and anemia is a trait that actually runs in my family. So it’s harder for me to absorb certain nutrients. I have a physical coming up in a couple of months and will have blood work done also to see my results and will update my findings.
If you are vegan, I commend you. Honestly, I tried twice to go full vegan and ended up with bad health, and an unbalanced body. Everyone is different, and not everyone can be 100% vegan all the time. If you can that’s okay and if you can’t, that’s ok too. It’s all about balance and doing what works for you.
I’m not saying that being vegan is a bad lifestyle choice at all….I even published a journal book on going vegan myself. Doing the work in the book through my own journey has taught me a lot about the importance of self care, and making conscious choices with my food. The impacts of industrial farming, what the industry does to the planet, plus the welfare of all the animals still impacts me greatly. I still eat many vegan meals, but I’m eating now in a more balanced way for my body with lean proteins, eggs, and fish along with lots of fruit and vegetables. There are a lot of good things in that lifestyle, it just doesn’t work for my own body. I would recommend really listening to your body and get regular check ups from your health provider to make sure you’re getting all the necessary nutrients and vitamins your body needs.
It’s been hard to adjust back to not eating 100% vegan, but I have to do what is right for me and what feels right for my body. I want to eat healthy and more naturally without processed sources. I want to cook and eat healthy without feeling guilty about it. I will keep moving forward on this journey and continue to post new recipes on my blog. Creating more cookbooks in the future is still my passion, and I hope you will continue to join me here for new recipes and inspirations.
